Installation of Wi‐Fi Infrastructure

Eddie C. L. Chan, George Baciu · 2012

This chapter discusses the process of designing and installing the Wi-Fi positioning infrastructure. It tries to answer several questions: Which type of access point should we buy? Is there any special configuration of the Wi-Fi access point? How many access points should we install? Where should we place them? The IEEE 802.11 family consists of a series of over-the-air modulation techniques that use the same basic protocol. The chapter covers how to choose appropriate Wi-Fi access points and configure how to place access points optimally. It explains the properties of Wi-Fi signal and the channel interference and shows that when the positioning system is supposed to cater to real users, it is essential to have the user present while collecting the RSS values for the fingerprint and to take into account the effect of the human body. Controlled Vocabulary Terms adjacent channel interference; channel allocation; IEEE 802.11 standards; protocols; wireless LAN
