G. Mamais, Andreas E. Papadakis, Menelaos K. Perdikeas, I.S. Venieris · 2001

An introductory chapter devoted to providing a short historical overview of data / communication networks and tracking the developments that have enabled the convergence of IT and telecoms. A unifying perspective is offered in a taxonomy that provides the framework for the more detailed examination of technologies representative of each network and service architecture type. Finally, new trends in IT network technologies are examined as exemplified by RSVP / DiffServices in the transport and signaling layers and distributed processing technologies and Java at the services layer.
