A TURN IN THE WEATHER... PART ONE
Bruce Abernethy · Traffic Technology International · 2003
The role of intelligent transport systems (ITS) in the US Homeland Security System is discussed. When terrorists strike, whether by air or sea, they must use surface transportation corridors monitored and managed by ITS in order to reach their targets. ITS will provide interoperability between surface corridor management and security functions. ITS would have a major role in providing coordinated and planned rapid response in the event of a terrorist act. The Road Weather Information Subsystem (RWIS) is described and its potential benefits to the Homeland Security system by being able to increase the early warning capacity of intended terrorist attacks are outlined. Sensors are being deployed at ports of entry to detect low level weapons of mass destruction. The threat of nuclear/radiological terrorism is outlined.
