Transparent Relaying Techniques
Mischa Döhler, Yonghui Li PhD · 2010
This chapter introduces some transparent physical layer protocols facilitating the deployment of transparent cooperative relaying systems. Transparent processing essentially implies that the relay is not accessing the information contents but only performs analog changes to the waveform by means of, for example, analog amplification, analog phase shifting, etc. The chapter deals with canonical relaying systems where information is relayed by several relays in a noninterfering manner. It moves on to distributed space-time processing architectures where the relays retransmit their information in a controlled manner so that known space-time processing mechanisms can be used in an adapted manner. The chapter focuses on the ways of optimizing the transparent relaying system in a distributed fashion. It also focuses on canonical algorithms pertaining to distributed space-time block coding, space-time trellis coding, spatial multiplexing and beamforming.
