Design and implementation of a database and browser for Shock tunnel data
Jamie Burley · The University of Queensland · 2001
This thesis is based on the preliminary work presented by Anthony Wong in his 2000 thesis. The purpose of this report was to investigate further the current information system used in the University of Queensland T4 Shock tunnel for the collection, manipulation and presentation of data and begin a process of implementing an improved system. Three main aspects were examined in this process; choice of a new data format (including the conversion of existing records to the new format), review of suitable database applications for accessing records, and the design of a browser program to handle the user end manipulation of the new data format. The XML based format XSIL was chosen as the new format for use in the system due to several desirable properties not present in the current format. Based on this selection, a number of XML database products were reviewed with a view to implementation in this system and finally the code for a functioning XSIL browser is presented with a number of required capabilities including the ability to take legacy data from the shock tunnel information system a convert it to the new XSIL format. Although further work is necessary before the new system will be able to be implemented, all the primary aspects of the process have been investigated and suggestions have been made for the continuation and completion of the project.
