Resource Discovery in Large‐Scale Grid Systems
Konstantinos Karaoglanoglou, Helen D. Karatza · 2014
A grid involves a multiplicity of resources that are heterogeneous in nature, encompassing a vast range of technologies. The full and efficient use of these resources requires effective resource discovery mechanisms that are able to overcome the complicity and dynamicity of such systems. This chapter discusses issues concerning resource discovery mechanisms and strategies in large-scale grid systems. First, it presents the theoretical background regarding the architecture of grid systems and the challenges when deploying resource discovery mechanisms for such systems. It provides popular well-known resource discovery mechanisms and analyzes them in order to present the different types of approaches in the resource discovery research area. In particular, the chapter analyzes the following resource discovery approaches: the semantic communities approach, the incorporation of peer-to-peer (P2P) discovery protocols into grid systems, and, finally, strategies based on the grid routing-transferring approach.
