1. The Purpose, Scope and Method The purpose of this paper is to seek to account for and analyze sentence structures of English by using a standard computer. The scope of the thesis is limited in several ways. First the claims made are to be regarded as tentative. Second a subset of constructions in English have been picked up at random from English textbooks that are commonly used in most high schools throughout Japan. Sentences in the subset will be divided into five patterns as taught in every high school in Japan. More specifically I will deal with the constructions of the following schematic type.
