Om Vikas · 2005
The first part of this paper chronicles technology trends in Computing and Information Revolution. The varying perspectives on the notion of digital divide are sketched and the importance of universal access to information in a pluri-linguistic setting is emphasized. Trends in Language Engineering are highlighted with specific reference to topics such as Content Development, Lexical Resources and Parallel Corpora, Human-Computer Interfaces, Automatic Translation, Speech Technologies, Natural Language Generation, Optical Character Recognition and Knowledge Mining. Major achievements in the past decade are listed and the Vision-2010 for Technology Development in Indian Languages is presented. New Initiatives including KUNDALINI, and Speech to Speech Translation are described. Importance of Standards, Testing, Evaluation and Benchmarking is stressed and a roadmap to reach the Vision-2010 goals is suggested.
