Fundamental Structural Features in the Visual World

: In this note we discuss the role of fundamental structural properties in human and computer vision. A selection of well-known and less known facts concerning the perceptual value of symmetry, anisotropy and regularity is presented. Finally, computational definitions of these basic features for textures are given and a few examples of their application shown. 1 Introduction At the ICPR'98 in Brisbane, Australia, there was a poster whose idea was the following. It is well known that the human eye scans a scene in a content-specific way. The visual information provided by the image is processed, encoded and transmitted according to this scanning. Let us try to mimic the fixations of the human eye and extract perceptually motivated local image features.
