Noise reduction algorithms for digital hearing aids
Nathaniel A. Whitmal, Janet C. Rutledge · 2002
Speech intelligibility is reduced for most listeners in the presence of background noise. Hearing-impaired listeners face special difficulties in noise which are often exacerbated by conventional analog hearing aids. Noise reduction techniques based on waveform representations, while improving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), produce only modest intelligibility gains. A new approach based on time-varying parametric modeling is proposed.
