Computer and Network Security
Nong Ye, Teresa Wu · 2014
Computer and network attacks, called “cyber attacks,” compromise security attributes (e.g., availability, confidentiality, and integrity) of computer and network assets (e.g., computer and network systems, databases, and applications running on systems). When developing databases, Windows application and Web applications described in Sections II to IV of this book, we need to be aware of security threats from computer and network attacks and learn how to protect computer and network assets from security threats. This chapter gives an overview of security risks by introducing three risk elements: assets, vulnerabilities, and threats. Various means of threats are illustrated through various types of cyber attacks. This chapter then describes security protection methods. Materials in this chapter are reprinted from Chapters 1 and 2 of the book by Ye (2008) with editing and copyright permission.
