Notes on basis sets for relativistic atomic structure and QED

This note attempts to assess the suitability of a number of types of basis set used to approximate solutions of Dirac operator equations in relativistic atomic structure and QED. Numerical evidence of basis set performance needs to be supported by mathematically rigorous theorems, most of which do not yet exist. The note outlines some attempts to supply such theorems.
