Carrier Ethernet Local Management Interface

Mehmet Toy · 2012

Ethernet local management interface (ELMI) protocol defined in Reference 1 operates between the customer edge (CE) device and network edge (NE) of service provider. It defines the protocol and procedures allowing autoconfiguration of the CE (customer equipment) device by the service provider’s NE device. LMI is a protocol terminated by the UNI-C of CE and by the UNI-N of the MEN. It provides the status of an EVC and UNI, and enables the CE to configure itself to access Carrier Ethernet services. E-LMI messages, STATUS and STATUS ENQUIRY, are encapsulated inside Ethernet frames. This chapter describes ELMI message elements and procedures between UNI-C and UNI-N. ELMI is not widely used in the industry today. Demarcation devices supporting ELMI are few. Service providers are not eager to provide ELMI services either. This might change as Operation Support Systems that can manage ELMI become available and user demand for ELMI picks up. Controlled Vocabulary Terms IEEE 802.11 Standards; network interfaces
