Continuous-phase modulation (CPM) schemes are much-used in the wireless communications infrastructure, due in part to the ability to use inexpensive transmitter demodulators. However as with other radio signals, these signals are subject to transmission through, sometimes severe, multipath channels. We use the Laurent (1986) representation to develop a more easily analyzed characterization of the corruption of CPM signals caused by multipath distortion and frequency discrimination. The results are useful for understanding the results of earlier empirical experiments and identifying more efficient and robust demodulation methods.
