A generic active service deployment protocol

Abstract. This paper motivates the need for an architectural framework for the dynamic deployment and control of active services in a heterogeneous network environment. The primary aim is the decoupling of the loading, configuration and activation mechanisms in a way that is active node platform or programming paradigm independent. A novel protocol is proposed for the dynamic deployment of active services in a heterogeneous network environment where diverse active node platforms and conventional routers coexist. The proposed protocol allows a client (i.e. an end-user, another active node or active network service management software) to query and negotiate the service loading mechanism of preference, for any active node. Therefore it provides a uniform means for service deployment across a multitude of active network solutions. 1
