We present a method for the 3-D reconstruction of objects from light fields. The estimated shape and texture information can be used for the compression of light fields or a better intermediate view interpolation. The representation of the objects is fully voxelbased and no explicit surface description is required. The approach is based on testing multiple voxel color hypotheses back-projected into the focal plane. Multiple views are incorporated in the reconstruction process simultaneously and no explicit data fusion is needed. The methodology of our approach combines the advantages of silhouette-based and image feature-based methods. Experimental results on light field data show the excellent visual quality of the voxel-based 3-D reconstruction. We also show the quality improvement for intermediate view generation that can be achieved using the estimated 3-D shape information.
