A compact introduction into the goals of the VITRA research project examining the possibilities of natural language description of images. The internal representation of spatial relations in the system is explained. This is followed by a few examples of how the knowledge of the meaning of natural language expressions pertaining to spatial concepts is used by the system in generating image descriptions in German
