The designs of programming languages emphasize efficiency and naturalness to various degrees. It is often the case that one aspect is undervalued in favor of the other. Sparrow is a programming language that attempts to maximize both efficiency and naturalness, while also remaining flexible. This paper studies Sparrow's general efficiency, analyzing the performance of fundamental language and library components. Several case studies are presented, showing that Sparrow enables concise code to yield efficient programs.
