Architectural Frameworks for a QoS‐Oriented Transport Protocol
Ernesto Expósito · 2012
The transport layer of the next generation will require modern software architecture able to facilitate application service usage while assuring the smooth and efficient integration of new mechanisms and protocols. This chapter explains the design and development of an error-controlled, congestion-controlled and time-controlled transport protocol. The chapter first presents a set of requirements intended to drive the design of the communication architecture of a modern transport protocol. Second, it discusses a state of the art and related works on software architectures aimed at designing and developing QoS-oriented and component-based protocols. Next, the chapter talks about the design of a component-based protocol, named the fully programmable transport protocol (FPTP), its architecture, its components and several evaluation studies. Finally, the chapter describes the guidelines for designing and developing a service-oriented protocol based on the component-based FPTP transport protocol.
