Architecture of the Distributed Intelligent Broadband Network

Markus Breugst, Lorenzo Faglia, Odysseas I. Pyrovolakis · 2001

After introducing the essential elements of the intelligent network and its evolutionary roadmap towards the distributed intelligent broadband network in the previous chapter, this chapter examines the architecture of the latter in greater detail. The functional plane is covered first identifying functional entities and information flows between them. The physical plain is viewed then, demonstrating possible groupings of functional entities into physical ones and delineating the involved interfaces. Finally the internal architecture of certain critical components is detailed. Throughout the chapter, the application of novel software technologies coming from the IT world into a telecommunications setting is underlined.
