A need has been identified for a generalised approach to the specification, design and development of real time embedded systems. There are many tools that cover different parts of the life cycle. Some of these are integrated to various degrees, but for real time systems it is probably true to say that there is not a set of integrated tools which covers all phases of the life cycle. This paper describes the way that the Data Oriented Requirements Implementation Scheme (DORIS) attempts to remedy this situation.
