Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks
Dr Ian F. Akyildiz, Mehmet Can Vuran · 2010
Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) are capable of observing the physical world, processing the data, making decisions based on the observations, and performing appropriate actions. This chapter first presents the architecture of WSANs. Then, it explains the challenges and the solutions to the sensor-actor and actor-actor coordination problems. Next, the chapter investigates the protocol stack of nodes and corresponding challenges for both sensor-actor and actor-actor communications. WSANs consist of sensor and actor nodes which collect data from the environment and perform appropriate actions based on these collected data, respectively. WSANs can be organized into two main architectures: automated architecture and semi-automated architecture. Depending on the type of application, one of these architectures may be used. The protocol stack for sensor and actor nodes consists of three planes: the communication plane, coordination plane, and management plane. Controlled Vocabulary Terms wireless communication
