Cerebral Microembolism Synchronous Detection with Wavelet Packets

Jean‐Marc Girault · 2012

Cerebral embolisms are the result of the migration of a foreign body in the normal blood circulation. One of the most common systems used to detect these cerebral microembolisms is the transcranial ultrasound (US) Doppler system, called TCD. This chapter is devoted to application at the interface of biomedical and signal processing. It presents the different steps necessary to design microemboli cerebral detectors. After introducing the issue and stakes, the chapter provides maximum prior information on the Doppler US blood flow signal with or without microemboli. It appears that detecting microemboli in a non-stationary environment could be partly solved by using both synchronized detectors and/or detectors based on wavelet packet decomposition. The detector performances were assessed from synthetic signals through receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) curves. Controlled Vocabulary Terms audio watermarking; Doppler measurement; medical signal processing
