Data Network Principles and Protocols

Martin P. Clark · 2001

This chapter provides a comprehensive foundation in the principles of data networks and introduces the reader to the layered ‘protocols’ used for setting up connections and for transporting data. The chapter also covers in detail the coding of digital signals for carriage across physical media, using the standard modulation techniques of amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), phase modulation and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM).
