Smart Cards in Telecommunication Systems

Wolfgang Rankl, Wolfgang Effing · 2010

The card phones installed by Telekom in Germany can in principle be used with two different types of cards. One is prepaid phone cards and the other is telephone card. Telecommunication is the technology used to exchange messages between persons and/or machines over arbitrary distances. The smart cards used in Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) mobile telephones, which are called subscriber identity modules (SIMs), set the pace for smart cards with regard to functionality and memory size. From the smart card perspective, the greatest difference between GSM and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is that UMTS uses a completely redefined security module called the universal subscriber identity module (USIM). The wireless identification module (WIM) specification includes a number of primitives in abstract form that describe basic functions. Browsers with simple structures that need only a small amount of memory and processing power are often called microbrowsers. Controlled Vocabulary Terms 3G mobile communication; GSM; smart cards; telecommunications
