Radio Interface Protocols

Jukka Vialén, Antti Toskala · 2010

The protocol layers above the physical layer are called the data link layer and the network Layer. In the UTRA FDD radio interface, layer 2 is split into sublayers. In the control plane, layer 2 contains two sublayers: the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol and the Radio Link Control (RLC) protocol. This chapter describes the general radio interface protocol architecture. For each protocol, it describes the logical architecture and main functions. The chapter explains the logical channels and mapping between logical channels and transport channels. For MAC and RLC, it defines an example layer model to describe what happens to a data packet passing through these protocols. The chapter describes the Radio Resource Control (RRC) service states together with the main (RRC) functions and signaling procedures. Then, it is concluded by an introduction to the early User Equipment (UE) handling principles and enhancements for the call set-up time reduction. Controlled Vocabulary Terms access protocols; media access protocol; open systems
