The design of motion simulators traditionally relies on low-level perceptual cues for inducing the illusion of self-motion (vection). The current study examined cognitive influences of purely auditory or auditory-vibrotactile-induced circular vection. The ecological categorization of sounds used for the synthesis of rotating acoustic fields (such as auditory landmarks versus movable sound objects) significantly modulated vection and spatial presence responses. In addition a specific auditory-vibrotactile interaction also suggests the importance of the contextual coherence across sensory modalities when designing vection-inducing environments.
