Cognitive Radio: Concept and Capabilities

Maria Stella Iacobucci · 2013

A cognitive system is able to adapt to changes in the environment and to react to them. The radio cognition cycle is presented. During the sensing phase, the cognitive device makes a real time wideband monitoring of the radio environment. Then, during the understanding phase, it makes a reliable characterization of the acquired context and chooses the best response strategy related to the context and user needs. Finally, during the action phase it changes radio parameters to provide the most appropriate radio resources and wireless services. Spectrum sensing cognitive radio systems provide dynamic spectrum management techniques that use the available spectrum at that moment in that place by limiting the interference. In a full cognitive radio every possible parameter observable by a wireless node or network is taken into account for adaptation and network optimization. A full cognitive radio leads to reconfigurable radio systems in both network and terminal sides. Controlled Vocabulary Terms cognitive radio; interference; optimisation; radio spectrum management
