Broadband content distribution - enabling the ~experience ~

S. Stevens · 2005

One of the many challenges facing a viable Broadband Content Distribution Architecture is that of the content experience of the user. Broadband content becomes compelling when it is delivered to the user at the rate and Quality of Service that is required for the specific type of Content. The carrier network(s) connect the content to the users and as such are responsible for delivering this experience to the user. ROADBAND carrier networks initially evolved to provide access to the Internet. Much of the early thought and design was around upgrading the last mile bandwidth that was constrained by dialup (64Kbps) or ISDN (128Kbps) in throughput to faster access speeds. Very little attention was paid to QoS issues or to any architecture/design requirements for delivering a new generation of IP based services to the consumer. Over time new forms of content services outside of traditional Internet services have come to market which make demands of the network beyond the current best-effort infrastructure.
