this paper, I will argue against Kayne's LCA and in favor of the position that PS-rules encode only dominance relationships. Linear precedence, I will suggest, is the result of violable optimality-theoretic constraints. My account will be framed within the optimality-theoretic implementation of Lexical Functional Grammar proposed by Bresnan (1998).
