Challenges of Distributing Video in Mobile Wireless Networks
Sanjoy Paul · 2010
Video can be distributed in cellular networks in three ways: (i) full download; (ii) progressive download; and (iii) streaming. This chapter explains how video content, including real-time television content and non-real-time on-demand video content can be distributed in an efficient and cost-effective manner to mobile handsets. To support multicast in the cellular network, there is a need to define the architecture and protocols to set up multicast trees across the cellular network spanning the core as well as the radio access network. The architecture and protocols of multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS) are described in the chapter. Digital video broadcast-handhelds (DVB-H) delivers video at high quality using higher bandwidth to user’s handheld devices. Forward link only (FLO) technology was designed specifically for the efficient and economical distribution of the same multimedia content to millions of wireless subscribers simultaneously. Finally, the chapter focuses on digital rights management (DRM) system. Controlled Vocabulary Terms digital rights management; digital video broadcasting; wireless networks
