Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is efficient for high-speed data communication used in broadband integrated services digital networks (B-ISDN). The 9.6Gb/s single-board switching element is the key building block of a B-ISDN switching network conceived as a fast packet (ATM cell) switching fabric.
