applications of the cotton strip assay are cited, and appear to be associated with poor conceptual models of soil physiological systems.It is concluded that the rate of breakdown of pure cellulose added to soil cannot provide an index of litter decomposition rate, release of litter nutrients, or 'general biological activity'.
