In this paper, a mobility predictive bandwidth reservation scheme is proposed to provide flexible usage of limited resource in mobile cellular networks. An admission control scheme is also considered to further guarantee the quality of service (QoS) of real-time traffic. The area of a cell is divided into non-reservation zone (NRZ), reservation zone (RZ), and handoff zone (HZ) to ensure that bandwidth is reserved in the target cell as mobile terminals (MTs) move into the RZ and leaves the NRZ. The amount of bandwidth to be reserved is dynamically adjusted according to the location and direction of MT. The performance of the system is evaluated through discrete-event simulation of a realistic cellular environment. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the new call blocking probability (NCBP), handoff call dropping probability (HCDP) and reduces the probability of terminated calls and cancel reservation based on location and current direction of MTs. An enhanced resource reservation is achieved as compared to the existing schemes developed to address the limiting factors in bandwidth reservation.
