Shape from Texture and Shading with Wavelets

Maureen Clerc, Stéphane Mallat · Birkhäuser Basel eBooks · 1999

The observation of a photograph or a painting demonstrates our ability to recover a three-dimensional shape from a single image. Shape cues are provided by a combination of various types of information, including shading variations, effects of perspective and texture gradients. The goal pursued here is to answer the question: given the image of a textured surface, how is it possible to retrieve the surface depth ? Recent references to the shape from texture problem can be found in [2, 3, 8, 10, 13, 17, 18], and the shape from shading problem has been studied in [7, 12, 14, 15, 16]. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
