Bicycle club mileage log: a servlet application for teaching Web programming
Tod Amon · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2003
This paper describes a set of integrated servlets we have developed for use as the cornerstone of a Web Programming class. The application, an online mileage tracking log for a bicycle club, is ideal in that the basic functionality is easily understood and yet students can be tasked with expanding and enhancing the product in many ways with projects of varying difficulty. We discuss the application (approximately 1400 lines of code), sample homework exercises, additional lecture topics that can be related to the application, sample advanced projects, and our experience working with the Tomcat web server. The code is open source and is available online.
