Like many other enterprises, hospitals and HealthCare organisations are now moving towards distributed information systems that allow information to be shared and disseminated across organisations in a standardised and secure manner. This is a challenging task given the semantic differences of messages used by different types of HealthCare professionals (eg, doctors and nurses). HL7 provides a standard for bridging this gap in the clinical environment. However, the growth of complexity and scale of healthcare information systems demands the adoption of latest distributed computing and communication technology for this purpose. OMG Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is a de-facto standard in distributed object technology. This paper presents discussion of different approaches to the development of applications incorporating HL7 and CORBA for a hospital (clinical) environment.
