Efficient Object-Oriented Programming in Prolog.

Peter Schachte, Georges Saab · 1995

We discuss classes, a package for efficient object-oriented programming in Prolog. Successive versions are described, along with a discussion of the problems encountered when using the initial version to build application products, and the solutions devised to correct these problems. Two examples which use the package are included. The work described herein was done while this author was at Quintus Corporation. 1 Introduction Object oriented programming offers many acknowledged benefits for application developers. Encapsulation aids in providing structural clarity, inheritance provides reusibility, and class modelling can help the aspiring developer analyze the components that make up the application. 1 These were exactly the benefits that Quintus desired when we began work on WorkPro, a Client/Server application which provides graphical interfaces to relational databases combined with rules written in Prolog. Many of the existing object systems available to Quintus had severe p...
