Recent Developments and Future Directions
Sándor Imre, László Gyöngyösi · 2012
This chapter overviews the recent developments and future directions in quantum information processing. It discusses the qubit implementations, the quantum-CPU and the quantum memory approaches. The chapter examines the most recent results, such as manipulation and control of quantum states or quantum error-correction in quantum memory devices, which describe the actual state of this field. The future of quantum computing depends on theoretical research and practical developments. The technological implementations could be the critical milestones in quantum information technology. The most important results have been realized in the field of photonic-based quantum communications and the photonic quantum computer. Quantum memories will be one of the most important elements for quantum computers, quantum repeaters, or quantum network communications. There are several different physical implementations of quantum memories, such as the atomic, photonic or electromagnetic, quantum-dot or trapped-atom, room- or ultra-cold temperature approaches, each of these approaches with different properties. .
