This chapter explores the move to hosted services and the rise of the application service provider, the evolution of the ISP and the challenge to the circuit-switched telecoms operator – the Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP), amongst others. The chapter moves on to discuss the most promising service that has appeared in recent years – Presence – and closes with an overview of application frameworks in the form of JAIN, J2EE, .NET and OSS-J.
