Interaction with technology is\toccurring increasingly in public and semi-public \tsettings and as a result the roles of \tspectator and performer are frequently being \tchallenged by the deployment of computing \tsystems. In this paper we discuss \thow the spectator, performer and interface \tfeature in what we class as performance, \thow we might analyse their interrelation-ships \tand how traditional roles have become \tdestabilised historically and technologically. \tIn studying these relationships, we examine \ttechnological and non-technological examples \tfrom art, performance and exhibition design.
