The complementary features of neural networks and expert systems allow the combination of these two technologies to make more powerful systems than can be built with either of the two alone. Models and guidelines for choosing and developing appropriate hybrid systems are emerging as successful applications appear. This paper summarizes the progress in the development of integrated neural network and expert systems.>
