The 82586 local communication controller togEther with the 82501 ethernet serial interface device provides the first total VLSI local area network solution. Together these devices provide all the functions of layers one and two of the OSI model for a CSMA/CD network as well as providing a very intelligent users interface. The 82586's architecture with an on-chip processor allows an unlimited number of back-to-back frame receptions with no host CPU support. To overcome the system difficulty of isolating faults in these asynchronous networks, the 82586 also provides a range of diagnostic capabilities which are controlled by the user's software.
