1962: Too Hard to Follow
Gary J. Beach · 2013
This chapter focuses on all the IT leaders who were influenced by John F. Kennedy’s 1962 speech at Rice University about America’s mission to the moon: Vint Cerf, who invented key components of the Internet; Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, who were both seven years old at the time; Gordon Moore, who was a cofounder of Intel; and Robert Metcalfe, who invented the local area network and was a teenager at the time. Whether math and science are perceived as hard, irrelevant, mysterious, or fun, students have no choice. They must take basic math and science courses. It is unfortunate that the challenge of filling America’s future Soviet science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) employment needs begins only in middle school or high school.
