Applications of SPB

David M. E. Allan, Nigel Bragg · 2012

The purpose of this chapter is to summarize the cardinal points of each application. Shortest Path Bridging (SPB) is unique at this moment in terms of offering the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) connectivity constructs directly in the infrastructure data plane. Traditional enterprise data center designs are based on a simple switching hierarchy, of which typically only the first two layers are layer 2 switches; above that, traffic is funneled into a tree of routers. The Radio Access Networks (RAN) for “4G” wireless extends significantly the requirements on the backhaul technology over previous generations, and it can also benefit from the properties of SPBM.
