Transfer in Verbmobil

The functions of Verbmobil, a translation software system designed for German-Japanese face-to-face dialogues with English as the dialogue language, have been analyzed in order to extract the different tasks for the development of the transfer component of Verbmobil. The analysis considers the following topics: (i) new conceptions for the modelling of translation relations, (ii) interfaces of the transfer component to other modules, (iii) demands of the transfer component on the input, (iv) output selection for generating, (v) demands for the development of efficient transfer strategies on the basic formalism. As a result a possible architecture of the transfer component is described, in which the transfer component generates information acting at the same time as a controller of the modules for semantic analysis, for dialogue analysis and for generating.
