Visualizing Time Series Data Structures: Graphical Tools

Søren Bisgaard, Murat Külahçı · Wiley series in probability and statistics · 2011

This chapter provides a discussion of statistical graphics principles for time series analysis. It discusses a number of techniques for data visualization and explains underlying principles of how our eyes and brain process graphical information, and also explains the do's and don'ts in graphical data analysis. The chapter introduces a number of sophisticated mathematical models and methods, but graphing the data is still one of the most important aspects of time series analysis. To avoid ambiguity in discussing statistical graphics, it is helpful to develop a terminology that provides meaning to words and concepts. The chapter adapts the principles of graph construction originally presented in Cleveland. It emphasizes different features of the data using different aspect ratios. In time series plots, the dependent variable is plotted against the independent variable time. There are various ways of plotting time series data and there are pros and cons for each. Controlled Vocabulary Terms independent variables; time series analysis
