Performance limiting factors in http (Web) server operations

This paper examines the limits of performance for a typical http server. Bottlenecks considered include the CPU, the network bandwidth, and the process table. Measurements reveal a performance envelope, with CPU and network bandwidth bottlenecks forming the boundaries.
