One of the remarkable applications of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is Wireless E-Care Systems for monitoring the health of senior citizens. However, for such an application, a WSN cannot operate in isolation as there must be a way for a monitoring entity to gain access to the data collected and processed by WSNs. Therefore the Wireless E-Care Systems should be bridged with Public Communication Networks such as LANs, Internet, GSM and PSTN. In this paper we present design and implementation of a prototype of Smart Application Gateway on the server that is capable of bridging the Wireless E-Care Systems with the Internet and with PSTN and GSM using VoIP Gateway. Results of the experiments, which we performed, show that this Smart Application Gateway is capable of making intelligent decisions on the data received from WSNs via base stations and if a senior citizen is found in unhealthy condition, the Smart Gateway sends emails, SMS and places voice calls on PSTN and GSM phones of paramedics.
