Analyzing hyperlinks networks: The meaning of hyperlink based indicators of knowledge production

Hyperlinks are the most commonly used attributes to study web sites and structures on the web. In this paper, we analyze and compare hyperlink networks using a variety of linking units on different levels of aggregation and specificity. Focusing on the scientific web, we selected the following linking units: countries, universities, departments and individuals. This paper discusses whether and how the heterogeneous linking patterns might provide information about knowledge production and its context
